The terms "cipó," "trepadeira," and "liana" are used to describe climbing plants, but they have significant differences in terms of growth, development, and cultural use. "Cipó" originates from Tupi-Guarani and refers to climbing plants that hang from trees, being flexible and used as ropes for tying. "Liana" comes from the French word "liane" and describes plants that crawl and cling to the ground and trees, also used as ropes. "Trepadeira" is derived from the verb "trepar" (to climb) and refers to plants that grow by supporting and climbing over other plants. These terms are distinct both historically and in terms of plant anatomy, with lianas developing woody secondary tissues as they grow. Understanding these differences is crucial for the proper use of these terms in research and scientific communication, and also reflects cultural and ethnobotanical aspects of the plants.
