Abstract

A origem das pteridófitas é antiga, com fósseis datando de 425 milhões de anos (Siluriano médio), havendo uma grande diversificação no Carboní­fero (360 milhões de anos), fazendo-as dominarem todos os ecossistemas terrestres. Mas foi na era Mesozóica (250 milhões de anos), com o surgimento e irradiação das angiospermas, que ocorreu o declí­nio da maioria de seus grupos (Zuquim et al. 2008).
